Feeling Overwhelmed By Social Media? Here Are 3 Ways to Disconnect This Weekend

Never has there been a time where the world is so connected as it is today. No matter where you are in the world, you can send a message to anyone in another part of the world. The internet has no only broke distance barriers, but also social ones, too. An average person, like you or me, can now tweet to our favourite authors, or comment directly on our favourite athlete’s picture for them to see. Sometimes, they even respond!

But sometimes, we can get so lost in our online world that we forget to live in the real one. it is so important to take a step back, disconnect from social media, and connect with life once again. I am a social media manager by day, but even I know when too much is too much! So today, I thought i’d share a few tips on how to take a little break from social media to kickstart your weekend!

  1. Turn off phone one hour before bed and one hour after you wake up!

This is one I try to practice on a regular basis, but really try to focus on accomplishing when I want to take a social media break. I used to wake up every morning and immediately check my phone. and if I didn’t have any messages or notifications from the night before, I would just mindlessly scroll through the feeds. I realized this was actually a really bad way to start my day because it would immediately put me in this like negative mindset. I would see that I didn’t get any new followers or likes, or scroll through my feed and obsess over how one insta influencer looked and would compare myself. This is NEGATIVE SELF TALK people and honestly staying away from your phone in the morning is so important. Instead of checking up on Instagram, maybe open up your Notes app and write down 3 goals you want to accomplish today, or 3 things you’re grateful for. I swear by this tip because it sets up such a wonderful and proactive morning.

I also try to stay away from my phone at least 40 minutes before bed. An hour is still a bit of a struggle, but I think this is an important tip as well. You gotta step away from that phone and really prepare your body for sleep. Instead of reading tweets from the day, try reading a book, meditating, or getting a good stretch in before you doze off!

2. Leave Your Phone At Home

I started to really realize how much I was picking up my phone while waiting for a class at the gym to start, or scrolling through my feed mindlessly while I was walking my dog. So I simply leave my phone at home when i’m out doing something that just doesn’t require it. It’s not easy to leave your phone behind when you’re so used to having it in your hand or in your back pocket, it’s like leaving your child for the first time! But the first time you reach for it, and it’s not there, you probably won’t reach for it again. It allows me to be present in the moment, not worry about what others are doing and posting about, and it forces me to have a conversation with anyone around me at that point, which just results in that awesome human connection we’re all really looking for!

3. Turn Off Push Notifications

It really is as simple as that. By doing this little step, it rewires your brain and dopamine receptors from constantly expecting something from your phone. And you don’t have to make this permeant, but try it for 24 hours and see how you feel. It help to be a bit of breather to just not have to see how many likes you got today, or who retweeted your witty tweet from last week.

These are three really simple ways to disconnect from social media when you need a break. Other ways are a bit more drastic for people, which include deleting apps from your phone that don’t (as Marie Kondo would put it) ‘spark joy.’ I did a whole app detox about 2 years ago and deleted all my social media related apps on my phone (ie: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat) to see if I could limit my usage. I ended up deleting Snapchat completely because I felt it was like consuming me, and I haven’t gone back to it since!
